Before you dive
in and get started on that painting job you have planned for
the weekend, take note of some of these tips to achieve the
best results possible:
Start painting at
the edges and move toward the center area from there. When
opening a new can of paint, it's always a good idea to keep
to the edges, even if you've already started painting,
because different batches of paint often vary slightly.
Variations in the color are much more noticeable in the
middle of a wall.
Once you begin
working, you'll want to achieve an even coat. Follow the
advice of professional painters and decant some paint into
another receptacle, such as a smaller paint can (you can get
these from your local hardware store or home center). Then
cut a piece of wire from a metal wire hanger and fasten it
across the top of the open can by twisting it around the rim
or handles. When you dip the brush into the paint, wipe the
bristles on the wire to get rid of excess so that you have
an even distribution of paint on the brush. This will make
it easier to create a smooth look.
Have helpful
tools on hand to make the process go quickly and easily. A
clean rag, for example, within reach is perfect for cleaning
up drips and spills that may occur as you paint the room. To
quickly touch up spots as you work, purchase a package of
disposable foam brushes. They are inexpensive and a great
tool for painting, although don't use them beyond a few
uses, as the foam eventually breaks apart and will leave
material on the wall if you continue to paint with it for
too long.
Practicing a
little patience is important to achieve quality results when
painting. When more than one coat of paint is required,
don't jump ahead of the game and apply the second coat
before the wall has dried to the touch. If you begin
painting again too early, the first coat of paint will lift
off and the entire job will be ruined. |
