Attic Conversion

Do You Need an Attic Ladder?

If you need access to your attic, an attic ladder might be the perfect solution. However, this is not the best fit for everyone. Before you make your choice, try to determine how often you will need to go into the attic as well as the space you have for the ladder itself. In some cases, you may find that stairs are actually a better choice. An attic ladder can help you add more accessibility to your home, but only if you take some time deciding on the best one for you.

But the question remains: do you need an attic ladder? If you find that you’re going to use your attic to store things from your home, you will need to find a way to get up into that area. And if you don’t have to access these items on a daily basis (i.e. seasonal clothing), a ladder is just enough access to help you out without getting in the way of the rest of the house. A ladder will also make it more difficult for children to get into the attic accidentally and hurt themselves. If you find that you are going up the attic more often or that you plan to use the attic as an extra room, a set of stairs may be a better fit.

For some, the space they have to get into their attic will determine whether they need an attic ladder. If you have a cramped area where the attic door is, you may just not have room for stairs, necessitating the need for a ladder. Go to your attic space to see just how much room you have to move around. You’ll probably know instantly whether or not you need a ladder or something more.

If you do find that you need an attic ladder, it’s a good idea to choose one that is sturdy enough to hold you or anyone else that might be using it. Try to find a ladder with a strong base that can easily balance you or look to install a ladder that will swing down from the door leading up to your attic. Either one of these options should be hard for younger children to access.
