Become
an Artist with Decorative Roller Painting
You may not think of yourself as an artist, but decorative
roller painting can showcase your artistic side. It used to
take the services of an interior decorator to achieve the
kind of decorative wall painting that can now be done with
specially designed rollers. Not only can you paint like a
professional, you can decorate your walls at a significantly
lower cost.
Decorative paint rolling is easy to do using a patterned
paint roller. The general steps include first applying a
base paint color, and then rolling over the base paint with
the patterned paint roller with a different color or glaze.
In some roller designs, a special foam roller controls the
amount of paint applied to the patterned roller. This
process is called positive paint application.
Decorative paint application can be used on the whole wall
or to create a border at ceiling level. The patterns on the
roller can actually make your wall look like it was wall
papered, but you don’t have the problem of messy glues and
misaligned wallpaper lengths. You also don’t have to ever
worry about replacing wallpaper which is a laborious job.
When tired of your roller paint decorative painting, you can
just repaint the room.
Decorative Roller Painting
Decorative roller painting can also create a mottled look on
walls which is soft and inviting. You can use a bright or
strong base color and then soften it with a softer mottled
paint on top. Some decorative wall painting uses a coat of
glaze applied over a base coat with a decorative paint
roller. This is called “loading”. You can also use a
negative paint application technique which is when you
remove some of the wet glaze you just applied using a
decorative roller or rag to create a new design.
Other decorative roller painting techniques include “color
washing” and “broken color” techniques. Color washing makes
a new color look faded and washed out so the wall looks
aged. Broken color painting techniques use several colors
applied over a base paint using a roller that creates a
textured look. The overlay colors can be glazes or washes.
Glazes are made with oil based paints and washes are latex
paint thinned with water.
With decorative roller painting you can create cloud walls
and ceilings, antique finishes or any other faux finish you
want. This kind of painting adds a very special decorating
touch to your décor that can enhance any room in the house.
You can easily do this kind of painting with the new rollers
and easy to work with paints. But if you are hesitant to
start painting your walls, practice on a board or piece of
sheetrock first.
