Some Waterproofing Basement Solutions

It's usually pretty obvious when your home could benefit from waterproofing basement solutions. You will begin to notice condensation on the walls, slimy mold in the corners or along the ceiling, or outright water in the floor. Not only is this a sign of damage to the foundation of the home, it can also cost you a lot in terms of water damage to any items you may have stored down there or ruining your furniture. In order to determine the best way to approach your water leaking problem is to figure out where the water is coming in and why.

Sometimes it is hard to figure out where the water is seeping in and which waterproofing basement solutions are best. A slow leak or several tiny fractures may be the cause. To determine where the water is coming from, tape a square of aluminum foil to a wall that is prone to dampness or condensation. Tape the foil to create an airtight seal. Wait a day or so and remove the foil. If the inside is wet, your problem is water seeping from the outside, if the outside is wet, the problem is indoor condensation.

Waterproofing Basement Solutions

The outdoor terrain of your yard could be causing the need for waterproofing basement solutions. If your yard is very flat or the land slopes towards the home, you could have the perfect situation for creating a wet basement. The most common solution for this problem is to slope the land away from the house. You should create a downward slope of at least 10 feet away from the foundation. Either sod or plant grass on the disturbed ground to ensure that it stays put and doesn’t just settle back around the basement exterior wall.

In some cases the necessary step may be to just repair or replace the downspouts or gutters. Once you have them in place, be sure to keep the gutters free of any debris. Clogged gutters allow the rain water to pool at the foundation of your home. This is one of the least expensive and easy waterproofing basement solutions you can find.
